It turns out that the “tolerant left” is just as a prone to dressing up in edgy costumes and committing crimes over in France as they are in Berkeley: three riot police officers have been injured after violent protesters armed with Molotov cocktails and other makeshift weapons descended on May Day marches.
Intense video from the scene of the chaos shows riot police zeroing in on a group of roughly 150 young protesters that had swarmed a traditional May Day march, which is meant to be an annual commemoration of workers’ rights. Even surrounded, the hoodlums continued throwing firebombs and firecrackers at police and other onlookers.
While it is unclear what exactly the protesters were demonstrating against, as they did not carry any sort of signs or clothing that would signify a political affiliation, their tactics resemble those used by anti-government agitators in years past.
Meanwhile, both conservative Marine Le Pen and globalist Emmanuel Macron held overlapping political rallies as each candidate scrambled to reframe the presidential race in their favor just days before voters head to the polls in a heated runoff.
Le Pen has characterized her opponent as a socialist in centrist’s clothing who would only serve the interests of the “caviar left,” pointing to his past as an investment banker and as the minister of the economy to the deeply unpopular President Francois Hollande. Macron decried Le Pen’s Front National party for its alleged ties to racism and xenophobia and has repeatedly claimed that her presidency would only serve to heighten racial and ethnic tensions in France.
