Imagine if the tables were turned and it was a conservative talk show host that made a homophobic slur against former President Barack Obama. Heads would have rolled so quickly that viewers would have gotten whiplash. But CBS has remained conspicuously silent after liberal darling Stephen Colbert made a vulgar oral sex joke about the president that Trump supporters have decried as homophobic.
“Sir, you attract more skinheads than free Rogaine,” Colbert said on Monday night. “You have more people marching against you than cancer. You talk like a sign language gorilla that got hit in the head. In fact, the only thing your mouth is good for is being Vladimir Putin’s c–k holster.”
Within 24 hours, the hashtag #FireColbert was trending on Twitter as legions of Trump supporters and supporters of common decency alike threatened a boycott unless the network part ways with Colbert.
“Time for him to go. Total trash. I will boycott advertisers,” one viewer wrote, while another observed: “So, Colbert is saying homophobic things again? Disappointing that CBS supports and empowers this.” Both tweets used the #FireColbert hashtag.
Other commenters used the language of the progressive social justice movement against one of its leaders in a very satisfying way.
“The fact that Colbert can make homophobic statements shows his privilege & systematic oppression of minority groups,” one person quipped. Another wondered, “Will there be consequences for Stephen Colbert’s obscene attack on the president last night, or even any comment from CBS?”
In a bizarre twist of fate, left-leaning Twitter users have begun to lambast Trump supporters for demanding that Colbert be fired – even though it is their favored tactic for shutting down conservatives who dare to espouse values that they don’t agree with.
