Former Democratic New York congressman Anthony Weiner pleaded guilty to the heinous charges that he transmitted obscene sexual material to a 15-year-old girl, which she alleged consisted of nude selfies and links to pornographic videos among other lewd messages.
52-year-old Weiner, who is married to longtime Clinton confidant Huma Abedin, entered a guilty plea with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan on a single charge of sending explicit material to a minor, the New York Times reported. In addition to the above allegations, Weiner was also accused of discussing so-called “rape fantasies” and of instructing the young girl to masturbate during video calls.
“I have a sickness, but I do not have an excuse,” a tearful Weiner told the teenaged girl. He agreed not to appeal any sentence between 21 and 27 months in prison.
Now, the former lawmaker faces a sentence of up to 10 years and jail and will most likely become a registered sex offender, but a New York judge will have the final say.
His punishment will hopefully mark the end of six years of constant public embarrassment that kicked off with “Weinergate” in 2011 – which saw Weiner accidentally post a compromising photo on his Twitter feed which – and reignited in 2013 when it was discovered that he was sexting another woman under the alias “Carlos Danger” while running for mayor of New York City.
Weiner checked into a sex addiction facility last October to control his salacious behavior but reportedly had to leave the facility before completing his treatment because he could no longer pay.
Despite the parade of scandals, Abedin has remained by Weiner’s side and was allegedly “working hard” last year to save their imperiled marriage. She reportedly blames his skirt-chasing tendencies on the intense pressure caused by his mayoral race and Abedin’s involvement in the 2016 presidential race and insists that she is still in love with Weiner.
