In a victory for the pro-life movement, controversial abortion provider Planned Parenthood has announced that it will close three of its six clinics throughout the state of New Mexico by the end of September, citing funding problems and falling patient numbers.

The affected locations will be those in Nob Hill in Albuquerque, Farmington, and Rio Rancho, KOAT News reported, while two more clinics in Albuquerque and one in Santa Fe will remain open.

“We are making some difficult decision about the best way to stay in New Mexico into the future,” said Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains chief experience officer Adrienne Mansanares. “Funding is one thing that we look at, but we also look at whether our patients will receive excellent care at another provider, or most importantly, come see us in any of our health centers throughout the state.”

The organization claims that it cares for around 11,000 patients in New Mexico alone and will expand operations at its remaining locations in order to better accommodate its patients.

“We have a lot of people who are low-income,” said Planned Parenthood communications manager Shaya Torres. “We have a lot of communities that are struggling to get health care in general. So we think Planned Parenthood is a safe space for people to come. We don’t turn people away.”

However, critics of Planned Parenthood have noted that there are plenty of low-cost community and rural health centers that provide better care without also offering abortions.

According to the Charlotte Lozier Institute, there are 165 federally-qualified community and rural health centers throughout New Mexico. At least one such clinic exists in Farmington, a dozen with a 25-mile radius of the Rio Rancho location, and over a dozen near the soon-to-be defunct Albuquerque location.
