Nearly a dozen arrests were made by pepper spray and taser-wielding police officers after an enormous melee broke out near Ohio’s popular Cedar Point amusement park, with a crowd of roughly 200 combatants and hecklers at one point encircling the overwhelmed cops.
The frightening incident took place just after 2:00 am on Monday, when an unruly crowd thought to have been comprised mostly of park patrons and Cedar Point employees gathered outside the Cedar Point Commons Apartments in Sandusky. Officials believe that the late-night brawl was a continuation of an earlier scuffle, the Toledo Blade reported.
While officers are still not certain what caused the brawl, they reported a chaotic scene when they arrived. Videos uploaded to social media show people shoving each other and even pushing police officers as the crowd grew increasingly violent.
According to the police report, though, people became truly incensed after officers arrested 19-year-old Carlos Demetrius Clayton of Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Clayton began fighting with apartment security guards who saw him pushing through employees, and at one point during the scuffle, he tried to take an officer’s gun. Another officer subdued Clayton with a taser and he stopped struggling.
Ten other rioters – all between the ages of 18 and 22 – were arrested and charged with crimes ranging from rioting and failure to disperse to resisting arrest and underage consumption. Police officers and Cedar Point security guards were eventually able to calm the crowd by working in tandem to subdue the instigators.
Sgt. Kevin Youskievicz of the Sandusky Police Department noted that a female officer suffered cuts on her elbow and a finger during the melee, while a security guard was punched in the head and suffered a swollen face.
