From the outside, a New Jersey teacher looked like the consummate Good Samaritan when she opened her home to a 15-year-old student who was kicked out of his relative’s home and left with nowhere to go. But police are now accusing Rayna Culver of letting the teen live with her so she could have sex with him.
The unsettling allegations date back to December 2015, when 43-year-old Culver obtained legal guardianship over a troubled young boy whom she met while she worked as the climate and culture leader at Rivera Middle School in Trenton, The Central Record reported.
According to the victim, their relationship began innocently enough, with the teen confiding in Culver about his struggles at home. They were so close that when Culver began inappropriately touching the teen, “he didn’t think anything of it,” the criminal complaint reads.
Things escalated in June 2016, when the victim was 15 years old. As he was about to fall asleep, Culver undressed him and began performing oral sex before proceeding to full-on intercourse.
“After that first incident, they would engage in sex often, and it was to the point where he felt that if he told her to stop she would get mad and kick him out of the house,” the complaint reads. “[The victim] told Culver via text message that he didn’t want to have sex anymore, and she made it clear that she did not want it to stop.”
He claims that the ordeal stretched on for months, with Culver expecting sex almost every single day. The victim turned over his cellphone, in which investigators uncovered graphic sexual conversations between him and “Mom” – which is how he saved Culver’s phone number.
According to Culver’s attorney, the allegations amount to “a completely fabricated recitation made up by a troubled young man.” She faces charges of second-degree sexual assault and second-degree endangering the welfare of a child. According to her social media profiles, Culver appears to have been married to the same man since 2003.
