Sad news today. Fresh Kid Ice, one of the founding members of 2 Live Crew died in Miami at 7:50am on Thursday morning.

Widely considered a pioneer for Asian rappers, he blazed his path alongside DJ Mr. Mixx and Amazing Vee as they formed their legendary group all the way back in 1984. Their notoriety reached new heights, of course, when they were signed to Luther Campbell’s record label.

Born Chris Wong Won, Fresh Kid really helped pave the way for today’s cutting edge artists. Without pushing the boundaries, their performances would be a lot more tame. Along with Campbell, Fresh was arrested in 1990 because police thought their on-stage antics were too vulgar.

The group’s album, As Nasty as They Wanna Be, was the first to be labelled “legally obscene” by the government (which led to the creation of those advisory stickers). It only made people want to listen to them more!

Prior to entering the spotlight, Fresh Kid actually served his country for four years in the U.S. Air Force. Later, he created Chinaman Records.

All we know is that he died from a “medical condition.” Luke Campbell took to Twitter to say, “My Condolence goes out to the family Chris Wong Wong Fresh Kid Ice of the 2 Live Crew who just passed away people we lost a legend.”

May he rest in peace.
