Sen. John McCain has been diagnosed with brain cancer. Doctors at the Mayo Clinic told CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta on Wednesday that the discovery was made when the 80-year-old McCain was in surgery to remove a blood clot last Friday. Lab results from the procedure confirmed a primary glioblastoma, an aggressive type of brain tumor, associated with the clot. The cancerous tissue was removed during the surgery, which lasted three to four hours. McCain will now likely undergo radiation and chemotherapy. He is currently recovering at his home in Arizona.

McCain’s daughter Meghan released a statement on Twitter regarding her father’s diagnosis.

Following the news, politicians from both sides of the aisle used social media to show support of McCain.
