House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) has been released from the hospital nearly six weeks after he was gunned down by a deranged anti-GOP shooter. He will be transferred to an inpatient rehabilitation facility, where he will remain until he can get back to work.
Scalise was taken to the MedStar Washington Hospital on June 14 after he and four others were shot during a congressional baseball practice. He underwent a series of harrowing surgeries but is reportedly “in good spirits” following the transfer.
“Congressman Steve Scalise has made excellent progress in his recovery from a life-threatening gunshot wound six weeks ago,” the hospital said in a statement on Wednesday. “Yesterday, he was discharged from MedStar Washington Hospital Center and is now beginning a period of intensive rehabilitation.”
The hospital went on to note that Scalise is “looking forward to his return to work” once he finishes his rehabilitation.
“He and his family are grateful for the care he received from the trauma team as well as the other doctors, nurses, and staff of MedStar Washington Hospital Center. The family also appreciates the outpouring of support during this time,” the statement concluded.
Scalise was injured by a single rifle wound that entered his left hip and passed through his right hip, inflicting serious damage on numerous bones, internal organs, and blood vessels, director of trauma Dr. Jack Sava said.
Following multiple surgeries weeks ago, doctors and the Scalise family were hopeful that he would be moved to the rehabilitation facility earlier, but an infection forced the congressman to return to the intensive care unit earlier this month.
On June 14, gunman James Hodgkinson – a far-left extremist and devoted supporter of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) – opened fire on lawmakers as they played baseball in Alexandria, Virginia. Lobbyist Matt Mika; House GOP aide Zack Barth; Capitol Police Officer Crystal Griner; Capitol Police Officer David Bailey; and Texas Rep. Roger Williams all suffered injuries of varying severities in the shooting. Hodgkinson was shot and killed by police.
