A high school teacher from Pennsylvania is facing multiple sexual assault charges after she allegedly entered an inappropriate relationship with a teenage student with whom she became “obsessed,” bombarding him with phone calls and text messages.
Melissa Bonkoski, who taught earth science at Owen J. Roberts High School in Pottstown, was arrested Thursday and charged with a whopping eight felonies, including sexual assault and unlawful contact with a minor, Daily Local News reported.
The 38-year-old kicked off an illicit relationship with the student – who was in her class – in December 2015. She quickly became enamored with the teen, going so far as to purchase a pre-paid cellphone so that she could flood him with calls and texts while remaining undetectable.
“Whatever you do, please don’t shut me out,” read a text message Bonkoski sent the victim in March. “I’m begging you.”
Investigators were easily able to track the “burner” phone back to a T-Mobile account owned by Bonkowski and discovered that most of the calls placed to the teenager originated from near her home and the school, an arrest affidavit revealed.
When confronted about the phone, the disgraced educator told police: “I thought I was being smart.”
Although Bonkoski and the victim allegedly never performed any sex acts, she let him touch her breasts, kissed him multiple times in her car, discussed the prospect of oral sex, and let him sleep in her bed.
The school district was informed of the charges against Bonkoski last Friday and swiftly asked her to resign.
“The school district has fully cooperated with the investigations conducted by those agencies regarding the allegations, and will continue to do so throughout the criminal prosecution of this matter,” said Acting Superintendent Anthony Costello.
Bonkoski was in her second year of teaching earth science at the high school, previously having taught science for several years in Miami, Florida. She was working on her second master’s degree in science education at the time of her arrest, her biography on the school district’s website claims.
Bonkoski was released from custody after posting her $80,000 bail.
