People freaked out when Disney announced that they would be pulling their titles from Netflix. The reason why is even more frustrating – they are starting their own streaming service.
If you are super into Disney movies or have small kids, it might be worth it since it’s going to be the exclusive home to the massive library of film and television shows but many might feel like adding another subscription won’t be worth it.
That is, of course, until they realize that this service will also include Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars films.
Here’s the thing, recently released data suggests that they will need 32 million subscribers – just to break even. That’s huge. Considering the fact that they will only be offering 400-500 movies and 7,000 television episodes, they are really gambling with this thing.
Yes, Star Wars and Marvel fans are loyal. Yes, parents of young children will be interested but will that be enough to make 32 million people dish out $9 a month? Only time will tell.
Right now, Netflix has 50 million subscribers domestically after a decade of being in business. Expecting to see similar numbers is probably a little ambitious for Disney. You never know, though. As Walt Disney, himself, once said: “It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.”
