When a social media user noticed a pornographic post among those liked by the official Twitter account of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), the former presidential candidate tried to wave away the embarrassing faux pas by claiming that “someone” who also has access to his account was the one who hit the like button.

The scandal came to light early Tuesday, when a two-minute adult film clip by Twitter user @SexuallPosts was found in the “Likes” section of Cruz’s Twitter account. The discovery kicked off a frenzy of derision and mockery across the social media platform, but Cruz has maintained his innocence.

“There are a number of people on the team that have access to the account and it appears that someone inadvertently hit the like button,” he told reporters.

“It was a staffing issue, and it was inadvertent, it was a mistake, it was not a deliberate action,” Cruz added when pressed as to whether he was the one who pressed the button. “We’re dealing with it internally, but it was a mistake, it was not malicious conduct.”

Cruz’s twitter bio describes him as a “father of two, [Heidi Cruz’s] husband, fighter for liberty. Representing the great state of Texas in the U.S. Senate.”

The conservative lawmaker even tried to soften the fallout from the salacious tweet by making a self-effacing joke: “Perhaps we should have done something like this during the Indiana primary.”

By Tuesday morning, @SexuallPosts had spied an all-too-perfect opportunity to add to its more than 600,000 Twitter followers.

“Follow for the Same Porn @TedCruz Watches,” the account’s profile read.
