A Pennsylvania funeral director has herself facing criminal charges after she allegedly took cellphone pictures of corpses under her supervision so that she could use the unsettling pictures to “gross out” her friends and family.
According to police, 27-year-old Angeliegha Stewart of East Stroudsburg faces charges of abusing corpses, as well as a slew of unrelated marijuana charges, WNEP reported. The drug allegations came to light after detectives searched through her phone in connection to the corpse abuse investigation and uncovered conversations about selling cannabis.
Authorities claim that Stewart took two particularly upsetting pictures, one of a corpse during an organ-harvesting procedure and another of a corpse that was already decomposing. Investigators are now working to identify the corpses to notify the families involved.
A spokesman for the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, where Stewart works, expressed disappointment in Stewart’s actions and claimed that employees would cooperate with the ongoing investigation. Records show that she applied for a public defender but has not obtained one as of press time.
In all, Stewart faces charges of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, criminal use of a communication facility, abuse of a corpse, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and disorderly conduct and harassment.
Police were tipped off about the corpse photos when a source told them that Stewart had been showing them off to friends and family. Stewart admitted to taking the pictures so that she could “gross people out” by showing them the photos.
Stewart remains free from jail on her own recognizance.
