If you haven’t already seen the new trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, you might want to think twice before watching it. Even the film’s director, Rian Johnson, was torn about whether fans should sit through the preview saying that we should avoid it if we want to go into the movie “clean.” Ugh.
So I watched it and, well, a huge part of me wishes that I hadn’t. Did it reveal the whole movie? Maybe? I don’t know but I feel like some of the plot twists could have been left out.
The 2-minute, 24-second preview begins with Rey (Daisy Ridley) being trained by Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) but things suddenly get pretty dark. The voice of Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) takes over and we get our first glimpse of what Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) looks like in this movie. Minor spoiler: he’s still emo as heck.
What else happens? A number of flashes occur but one thing that really stood out was the imagine of Leia sitting there watching a screen as her son, Kylo, appears to put a target on her vessel. Yikes. Maybe this is how they will explain her absence.
Luke says that he’s only seen power like Rey’s once before but adds “this is not going to go the way you think.” Whatever that means!
Poe (Oscar Isaac) is trapped somewhere while Finn (John Boyega) challenges Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie) head-on.
People are talking a lot about two other things. First, we get to see Snoke in the flesh looking a heck of a lot like Smeagle from Lord of the Rings screaming that someone needs to “fulfill your destiny!” while Chewbacca battles alongside porgs in the Millenium Falcon. There’s been some comparison between the porgs and Jar Jar Binks but let’s hope they are less annoying.
In the final scene, we see Rey who says, “I need someone to show me my place in all of this.” The shock comes when Kylo Ren extends his hand… Only time will tell whether this is a crafy misdirection or the actual moment when she goes to the Dark Side…
