Five days after he was suspended from the company amid multiple accusations of sexual harassment, Amazon Studios head Roy Price has resigned from his post, marking the latest chapter in a controversy that could hamstring Amazon’s efforts to get into the original productions game.
The allegations against Price came to light in a Hollywood Reporter article published last week, detailing the harassment that “The Man in the High Castle” producer Isa Hackett claims to have suffered during the July 2015 Comic-Con in San Diego.
Hackett, the daughter of author Philip K. Dick and the executive producer on both “High Castle” and the upcoming “Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams,” claims that she met Price for the first time at a dinner on July 10, 2015. He allegedly invited her to an Amazon staff party later that night and found herself in a cab with Price and Michael Paull, then another ranking Amazon exec.
“You will love my dick,” Price allegedly told Hackett in just one of many attempts to seduce her. She claims that she shot him down by noting that she is a lesbian with a wife and children, but Price continued to proposition her, at one point loudly whispering in her ear, “Anal sex!”
Hackett then took the matter to Amazon brass, who retained an outside investigator to get the details from Hackett and open up an inquiry. She claims she was never told about the result of the investigation.
“We take seriously any questions about the conduct of our employees,” Amazon told the outlet in a statement. “We expect people to set high standards for themselves; we encourage people to raise any concerns and we make it a priority to investigate and address them. Accordingly, we looked closely at this specific concern and addressed it directly with those involved.”
Amazon Studios has replaced Price with Albert Cheng as its interim head, an Amazon spokesperson said, at a time when the company hopes to mount a challenge against Netflix and Apple in the streaming originals business.
The incident has also reportedly cost Price his engagement, with multiple outlets claiming that fiancée Lila Feinberg has cancelled their November wedding.
