A two-year-old Rottweiler in the United Kingdom nearly landed herself a world-record title after delivering a litter of fifteen (!) puppies, the second largest litter ever successfully delivered in her home country.
Eleanor Usher, the owner of the proud new mama Jessie, was only expecting her beloved Rottie to give birth to five puppies, Metro reported.
“We had been given a due date of Tuesday, but on Sunday at around 1:50 am I heard this scratching noise from the bottom of the stairs,” she recalled. “Jessie had already given birth to one puppy under the stairs and another in her bed, without us even knowing.”
So far, Jessie has proven more than capable of taking care of her expansive brood, with Eleanor and her husband, Ian, describing Jessie as a “fiercely independent” mother who will not accept any help in feeding the pups. Her motherly instincts even extend to the family’s seven-year-old cat.
Eleanor and Ian plan to put the puppies up for sale in six to eight weeks, but until then, they will likely keep Jessie busy with feeding them almost all day long. The experience turned out to be a once-in-a-lifetime thrill for Jessie’s proud owners.
“We hadn’t had an ultrasound, because it’s so expensive and I’d been told to expect something between six and eight babies,” Eleanor said. “After the sixth puppy, I was saying: ‘That’s a good girl, you can stop now, you don’t have to do anymore.’ But they just kept coming and coming.”
“We didn’t even need to do anything to assist her,” she marveled. “They were all just coming out without any need for help. She made it so easy for us.”
According to Guinness World Records, a Neapolitan mastiff from the United Kingdom holds the title for the largest litter, delivering a whopping 24 puppies in November 2004 via Caesarian section.
