The family of a young man who was pronounced dead was overwhelmed with shock when the 24-year-old suddenly sprang back to life just before he was about to be placed into the earth. The man was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, but sadly did not survive much longer.
The joyful-then-tragic incident took place in Peru, where Watson Franklin Mandujano Doroteo was about to be interred at his final resting place as friends and family looked on. His body had already been prepared for burial by an undertaker and he was moments from getting sealed away when a stunned onlooker realized he was breathing.
A doctor was called to the scene and confirmed that Doroteo was technically still alive, so the funeral came to a screeching halt as he was taken to a nearby hospital. There, despite the best efforts of emergency workers, Doroteo was officially pronounced dead.
According to his family, the life-and-death mix-up began when Doroteo went in to get a root canal treated. He was taken to the hospital after the dental surgery when he began suffering a fever and chills and was likely given diazepam, a sedative, to cope with his symptoms.
Doroteo’s family believes that he was so heavily sedated that doctors mistook his listless body for a dead one, so they pronounced him dead and carried on. Now, the family is seeking justice and answers.
For now, it remains unclear whether Peruvian police are looking into whether there was any malpractice to blame. The family is also considering whether to take legal action against the medical staff involved, potentially arguing that the initial pronouncement of death lead to his ultimate demise by not allowing him access to life-saving treatment.
