He wants you to know that he’s kind of a big deal: “Happy Gilmore” star Christopher McDonald, perhaps better known to many as Scooter McGavin, tried to use his status as a famous actor to get out of a DUI arrest on Saturday. It didn’t work.
McDonald had apparently downed a few too many drinks that evening because at around 9:00 pm, he sent his silver Porsche careening off the highway, through a gas meter and into an embankment, TMZ reported.
According to an eyewitness, McDonald tried to charm his way out of the situation by reminding the cops that he was in “Happy Gilmore.” They’ve clearly never seen the movie if that old trick didn’t work. McDonald was then taken to the drunk tank and held in custody until he could sober up before being released of his own recognizance.
This is McDonald’s second brush with the law for drinking and driving. Back in October 2013, he was busted in North Carolina for driving with a blood-alcohol level of 0.15, nearly twice the state’s legal limit of 0.08.
Pictures surfaced of McDonald hanging out in a local bar and tossing back beers. By the time police got to him, he was reportedly so drunk that he could barely finish a sentence.
Earlier this year, McDonald referenced his own DWI to offer words of encouragement to legendary golfer Tiger Woods, who famously found himself in a similar mess.
“I went through it myself, I got off. He’ll get off,” McDonald reassured. “He’s been a hero of mine and a hero of America for a long time. One of the greatest golfers ever.”
