At least eight fatalities have been reported Tuesday afternoon after a man in a Home Depot rental truck drove 20 blocks down a bike path and mowed people down along the way before jumping out of the vehicle with fake guns and getting shot by police. Now, federal authorities are taking over the investigation amid reports that the attacker screamed, “Allahu Akbar,” Arabic for “God is Great.”

According to the New York Police Department, one man is in custody in connection to the reports of gunfire that caused pedestrians in the area to run for cover, the New York Daily News reported. Footage showing a Home Depot truck sitting on a median has emerged.
“He shot about 15 times toward the pier and down West St.,” one witness said.
Jesus! A car just ran over 2 people and then crashed into a school bus. I see two dead bodies and citibikes on the floor destroyed.

A separate witness told the outlet that he saw two trucks crash into each other and spark a road rage incident, with one driver getting out to chase somebody while firing five or six times. It is not clear if that incident occurred or was related to what has been described as a mass casualty event.
“What happened was there was a car crash… he came out of one of the cars,” a Stuyvesant High School student told the New York Post. “We thought it was a Halloween thing. He started running around the highway. There was another guy in a green shirt that was chasing him around.”
Oh my god I just heard gun shots and ran with my dog. Downtown. Fuck.

Other videos show bodies strewn along a bicycle path near Stuyvesant High School, with first responders treating victims near a school bus that appeared to have been involved in a vehicle collision, the New York Times reported.
Several nearby buildings were placed on lockdown, with police officers and a bomb squad detachment telling those inside to take shelter while authorities secure the area. The NYPD has said that they are not looking for any additional suspects at this time.
