A woman who became a social media arch-villain after a video surfaced of her snatching an Uber driver’s hard-earned tips out of a box has been identified as 18-year-old Gabrielle Canales, who has now had both her Uber and Instagram accounts deleted over the incident.
In a video that was originally posted in August but went viral this week, Canales could be seen riding in the back of an Uber with two friends in New York City. As her friends make small talk, Canales can be seen nervously glancing back and forth between the cash and the driver, Mohammed H. Bhuiyan, apparently planning her heist.
When the car comes to a stop, Canales gathers her belongings and gets ready to exit the vehicle. Instead of leaving a tip, though, she reaches her hand into the tip jar and grabs a fistful of cash before jumping out, staring directly at the hidden camera all the while.
Buiyan turns around to see where the noise came from before realizing that he had been robbed and proceeds to angrily honk the horn, but the trio of youngsters is already walking off behind his car.
Although the video didn’t gain much traction when it was originally uploaded, it has now been widely shared and circulated across social media and has even been picked up by news stations. In the wake of the incident, Canales posted a picture to Instagram appearing to gloat about the theft and claimed she “only” took five dollars from Buiyan, which she says she later returned.
Her confession was received about as well as one would imagine, and Instagram agreed with the hate, deleting her account and banning her from the platform. She has also been kicked off Uber.
