After porn star August Ames committed suicide on Tuesday, many attributed her tragic mental health issues to the bullying that she suffered on Twitter for refusing to have sex with a gay porn actor. However, an interview she gave months before her death revealed that Ames had a history of depression that could have exacerbated her run-in with social media harassers.
Ames, 23, joined the adult film industry in 2013 and was quickly becoming a standout star thanks to her huge social media presence. Things took a turn for the worse, though, when Twitter bullies began blasting her as a homophobe for refusing to work with an actor that had previously shot gay porn.
whichever (lady) performer is replacing me tomorrow for @EroticaXNews , you’re shooting with a guy who has shot gay porn, just to let cha know. BS is all I can say
The backlash caused her to go on the defensive: “NOT homophobic. Most girls don’t shoot with guys who have shot gay porn, for safety. That’s just how it is with me. I’m not putting my body at risk, I don’t know what they do in their private lives.”

During an interview with podcast host Holly Randall, Ames divulged details of her traumatic childhood that involved sexual assault at the hands of family members.
“I have an awful relationship with my dad, I tried to forget about it and talk to him about how I was feeling about my childhood and everything because there was a lot of sexual molestation, not from my father but from his, so I had to suffer from being molested by my grandfather,” she explained. “When I finally told my dad, he didn’t believe me.”
Ames said that her father put her in a group home at age 12 for making the allegation, leading her to become even more emotionally troubled.
“Some days I’ll be fine and if I’m not doing anything I’ll get these awful flashbacks of my childhood and I get very depressed and I can’t get out of bed and cancel my scenes for like a week or two,” she told Randall.
The Ventura County Medical Examiner confirmed that Ames died of asphyxiation due to hanging, The Blast reported.
“She was the kindest person I ever knew and she meant the world to me,” said her husband, Kevin Moore.
