A prominent YouTuber who uploaded a video making fun of a powerful Mexican drug lord was shot to death last week after a group of men busted into the party he was attending and opened fire in what appeared to be a calculated hit.
Juan Luis Lagunas Rosales used the screenname “El Pirata de Culiacan” and was known for his popular Facebook, Instagram and YouTube accounts, where he had a combined follower count numbering in the millions. He recently shared a video mocking Nemesio Osegura Cervantes, a cartel boss nicknamed “El Mencho” who has ties to El Chapo.
“El Mencho can suck my dick,” Lagunas Rosales could be heard saying in the video, which many online commenters now believe was responsible for getting him killed.
Lagunas Rosales was with a group of friends at a bar in Culiacan at around 11:00 pm on Monday when a group of armed men burst into the music venue and began shooting, focusing their fire on the social media star. He, as well as a 25-year-old bar employee, were left mortally wounded due to multiple gunshot wounds.
Shortly before his death, Lagunas Rosales photoshopped into the infamous last photo that rapper Tupac Shakur took before he was killed.
He became famous on social media thanks to his self-deprecating sense of humor that often saw him poke fun at his baby face and chubby figure. Lagunas Rosales was also popular among the younger set for his fast-and-loose lifestyle, which frequently included pictures and videos of him drinking and dancing in some of Mexico’s hottest clubs.
El Mencho is one of the most wanted men in Mexico and currently has a $5 million bounty on his head. He leads the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, which is currently battling Los Zetas and the Knights Templar Cartel for control of the cities of Guadalajara and Jalisco and the states of Michoacán and Veracruz.
