President Donald Trump has offered his support to protestors in Iran who have demonstrated for four days against the country’s clerical leadership, defying President Hassan Rouhani’s veiled threats for an even stronger crackdown against dissidents.

“Iran, the Number One State of Sponsored Terror with numerous violations of Human Rights occurring on an hourly basis, has now closed down the Internet so that peaceful demonstrations cannot communicate. Not good!” Trump tweeted.

Earlier in the day, Trump used the social media platform to take a shot at the Islamic Republic and hinted that the United States could get involved depending on how Rouhani’s government handles the protests.

“Big protests in Iran. The people are finally getting wise as to how their money and wealth is being stolen and squandered on terrorism. Looks like they will not take it any longer. The USA is watching very closely for human rights violations!”

In his first speech since the protests kicked off on Thursday, Rouhani conceded that the Iranian people had the right to protest and speak out against the government but insinuated that there is a fine line that should not be crossed.

“The government will show no tolerance for those who damage public properties, violate public order and create unrest in the society,” he said.

Pictures on social media from various parts of the country revealed a roiling protest that involved tens of thousands of Iranians squaring off against the Islamic Republic officials and clerical elite that control the country’s government.

While some protesters aired grievances ranging from allegations of corruptions to desperation over a slow-growing economy, others went so far as to demand Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei step down. So far, two people have been killed and hundreds more arrested as a result of the demonstrations.
