“Ghostbusters: The Video Game” Out Tomorrow

It feels like we’ve been waiting for centuries but, finally, Ghostbusters: The Video Game will be released tomorrow.  Seven games based on the popular films have been released in the past (the most recent was The Real Ghostbusters on GameBoy in 1993) but this one definitely looks like the best in the franchise.

I’m guessing the developers realize how many fans will want to play it since the game is available on PC, PSP, PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PSP and Nintendo DS.  Of course, gameplay will vary from one platform to the next with the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions focusing on the action aspects (and will include online multiplayer content) of the game while the Wii and PS2 versions will include puzzle elements (as well as offline multiplayer content).  The version for Nintendo DS is supposed to be remarkably different and will utilize the touch screen but will be comparable to the old Ghostbusters computer game.

The plot, which was written by Dan Aykroyd (Ray) and Harold Ramis (Egon), picks up two years after the events in Ghostbusters II and will take place during Thanksgiving 1991.  Gamers will step into the role of a new recruit who will be testing out new equipment.  I’m guessing players will spend some time getting familiar with the controls and gear in the early part of the game but will have to put their skills to the test when the team is called to investigate some paranormal activity.

Fans might be thrilled to know that, throughout the game, they will get to see some ghosts from the movies including Vigo, Slimer and, my personal favorite, the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man (I’m guessing these will be some of the big bosses).

Here are some screenshots from the Xbox 360 version but you can check out some Wii images too.

The game will feature the voices of most of the original cast (Aykroyd, Ramis, Ernie Hudson, Bill Murray and Annie Potts) but Rick Moranis (Louis) and Sigourney Weaver (Dana Barrett) declined to reprise their roles.  Alyssa Milano has joined the game as new character, Dr. Ilyssa Selwyn.  Check out the trailer:
