10 Ways to Hurt Your Personal Brand in the Workplace

I read a great article today on Yahoo! HotJobs that gives a great list of 10 ways to alienate coworkers. Not only is the list amusing (and too true), but it’s also a great reminder of little things you can do – or rather, not do - throughout your workday to avoid hurting your personal brand. No matter how great your work is, if your overall personal brand isn’t a good one, the way people view your work will suffer.
Here are the top 10 office irritants according to the Yahoo! HotJobs article, which you should try to avoid:
- Eat stinky snacks
- Make endless meeting requests
- “Reply to All” all the time
- Pump up the volume
- Be the office boozehound
- Take super long lunches
- “Borrow” newspapers or magazines
- Use your manager as a referee
- Avoid attending company gatherings
- Always have the last word
I’m sure you can think of people you’ve worked with who are guilty of some of the behaviors on this list. Are you guilty? If so, make the necessary changes now to build your personal brand and your career.
Can you think of any other office irritants to add to this list? You can read the full list from the Yahoo! HotJobs article here.

I’m speaking out of turn here, as I haven’t worked in a corporate office in years… but, this just came up with one of my clients:
#11: Be the party animal at the holiday party… (could be an extension of #5, or part of #12)
#12: Be the office whore (male or female).
Ah, nothing like the walk of shame down the hall…

Excellent additions, Vikram! I’m sure many of us can think of former or current coworkers who have been guilty of both of these. I know I can (unfortunately).
