10 years ago today, former St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Mark McGwire hit his 62nd home run of the 1998 season. It’s hard to believe that it has already been 10 years. Gone is McGwire’s single-season home run record, thanks to Barry Bonds, yet Big Mac still hasn’t made it into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
McGwire has been somewhat of a ghost since he retired from baseball. One of his few public TV appearances came when Congress asked former and current players of Major League Baseball to testify on the use of steroids in the game, where McGwire stated he wasn’t there to talk about the past and refused to answer questions.
Ever since a reporter discovered a bottle of androstenedione, which was legal in MLB at that time, in McGwire’s locker, several fans and media members have wondered is that all he was taking? Were other steroids involved? Those questions could keep McGwire out of Cooperstown forever.
Yet, today is about an anniversary. So, happy 10th anniversary to Big Mac for breaking Roger Maris’ single-season home run mark. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch has a lot of coverage on the anniversary with articles about the homer, interviews from some people involved, including Cubs pitcher Steve Trachsel who surrendered the record breaking dinger, and plenty of photos from the event.
