Eleven people were killed when a stampede erupted at a concert in Morocco featuring artists like Kylie Minogue and Stevie Wonder. Most of the victims were women and children.
Apparently, just after midnight more than “70,000 spectators were at the Hay Nahda stadium to see home favourite Abdelaziz Stati sing.” Even though 3,000 uniformed police officers were at the event, the crowd brought down a wire fence, setting off a stampede.
It’s unclear how many other people were injured but reports do indicate that there are survivors in the hospital in critical condition.
The Mawazine festival, created in 2001, included about 1,700 local and foreign performers and has become one of the most important events in the African nation.
