11 Tips for Getting A Blog Writing Job

A couple of days ago I posted a link to writing blog proposals. Today I’ve found another resource aimed at the same thing. Darren Rowse, creator of problogger and a true expert on all thing blogging, has 11 tips for getting a blog writing job in his article titled How to Apply for a Blog Job.
The article is based on his conversations with folks who hire bloggers. He has access to these employers because they post blog jobs and he’s famous in the blogosphere. He also makes it clear that there are fewer blog jobs than applicants. If you want to get a blogging gig, pay attention to all his tips.
All his tips are important, but I was particularly amused by tip 3, Sell Yourself. There he notes that many bloggers seem to, well, hesitate to sell themselves. I’m amused because this is something many writers share.
If you want a paying gig writing blogs, follow his instructions; you’ll dramatically increase your odds.

Darren always has great advice, which is why his blog is so popular. I still believe it is more lucrative and satisfying to start your own blog. If you are going to submit yourself to the grind of writing five to fifteen articles a week (which is what it takes for a blog to be successful in most cases) then you might as well allow yourself to blog about what you want instead of what some employer wants. There is more to blogging than just writing though, so I understand why some people choose to let someone else run the show.
John, I can’t imagine doing more than two or three posts a day… which is one reason a network works so well for me.
I think you were very smart to join B5. I have no idea what they bring to the table as far as payment goes, but I know they have some excellent search engine clout and as far as I know, only minimal editorial oversight.
