12,000 Calories A Day…Michael Phelps Does It, Why Can’t You?

Olympics Day 6 - Swimming

I’ll tell you why not. Unless your metabolism is as fast as his and you’re swimming 30 hours a week, then perhaps you should stick to the recommended 2000.

Olypmic gold medalist, Michael Phelps said that he consumes on average about 12,000 calories a day and swims about 30 hours a week when he’s training. You can do the math and figure that’s at least 6 hours a day if he takes two days a week off. I enjoy swimming as well. It’s great exercise, but 6 hours a day is crazy. But look at it this way. It has paid off for him greatly.

Here is what he told NBC that his average daily meals might look like:

Breakfast: 3 fried egg sandwiches, 2 cups coffee, 5-egg omlette, bowl of grits, 3 pieces of french toast, 3 chocolate chip pancakes

Lunch: 1 pound pasta, 2 ham and cheese sandwiches, energy drink (1,000 calorie)

Dinner: 1 pound pasta, 1 large pizza, energy drink (1,000 calorie)

To me that seems like a lot of Caffeine with the energy drinks and two cups of coffee. But who the hell am I to question his diet…seem to be working for him.

  1. Mike says:

A kilo of pasta would take forever just to eat and fast metabolism or not it would make you feel like rubbish. All the other swimmers are training just as hard, the bottom line is the americans saw the last obscene drug cheat Ian Thorpe get away with it so they thought they would do the same. Bottom line the secret to Phelp’s success, human growth hormone and other undetectable performance enhancing drugs!

  2. Scott says:

Yeah, Mike. Every time someone wins they MUST be using performance enhancing drugs. I suppose if it was a UK swimmer you would be all proud right?

  3. Kelly Turner says:

wow- of COURSE micheal phelps is taking drugs. Hard work never got anyone anywhere, right?

He beat records, but so did a whole host of other swimmers. He just beat them by the most.

How dare he devote his entire life to the sport he loves, and then WIN? Dirty cheater.

MAN!!! I was just watching the Olympics and this woman swimmer from the UK shattered a world record in the freestyle I think! It was amazing! But she must have been on performance enhancing drugs to do that, right?

In all seriousness, I had absolutely no bitterness toward here and I thought “Good for her”. It’s funny how someone is such a poor sport that when someone else wins it’s always some kind of cheating method. But when your favorite wins…it’s all good~

  5. Fred says:

Funny how you guys hate people talk sh** about Michael Phelps in the mean while it’s okay for the US to talk sh** about china. “oh yeah, they are underaged….blah blah blah”

  6. Scott says:

Regarless of age, that little Chinese girl is an amazing athlete. However, rules are rules. If Michael Phelps was caught cheating than a due punishment would not have me upset at the Olympics, but rather dissapointed in Phelps for using unsportsmanship like methods of winning.

If it was someone elses team winning, I wouldn’t be saying “they must be on ‘roids’, I’d be saying, “Did you see the ’so-and-so’ team? They were great!” But unfortunately people will be people…

  7. talalelei says:

look here little miss know it all , yeah i mean u kelly turner. u got no right to say those things about michael, u little twit!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Scott says:

I think your misinterpreting her words, Tal. It was a response to the first guys accusations of Phelps using drugs. It’s a little something called sarcasm.
