$1500 For An iPhone, Seriously?!?

YouTube on the iPhone

Well if you’re Deutsche Telekom apparently you are. According to the report by Mac Rumors, a court ruling prompted the telecoms company to start selling unlocked iPhones for 999 euros or 1,477 dollars. Whoa!?! That’s more than a MacBook.

The report also said the people from Germany who bought their iPhones after November 19 can have their phones unlocked for free. Prior to this, all unlocked iPhones were just hacked.

The iPhone is a great device but seriously… $1500? That’s just highway robbery. But I have to give props to the German courts for ruling that a telecoms company can’t monopolize a device. I wish more countries would act that way. Imagine if unlocked phones were being sold in the U.S. That would be awesome…

If the iPhone comes out in your country unlocked, would you buy one for $1500. My answer? Hell no!!

“If the iPhone comes out in your country unlocked, would you buy one for $1500. My answer? Hell no!!” — Which is exactly why T-Mobile is selling the unlocked phone for this price. ;-)
The court order was initiated by Vodafone so there is no nice judge who thought about the customers and for now and the next two weeks it’s just an order not a judgement. ;-)

Btw: A Macbook sells for 1049 Euros here in Germany. So the price for an unlocked iPhone is NOT more than a macbook.

Hey Daniel, thanks for the clarification. I was not aware that a MacBook was being sold for that much. Boy, that’s pretty expensive…

Well let’s hope that they can still bring the price down.

    Hi Juan.

Problem is that Apple seems to ignore that something Like currency change exists. Iphone for 399€ while you in The us pay the same amount in $. But Not just Apple. Song did the same with its ps3. It is a Bit unfair if one looks over to you guys But i Can live with it. The better it gets when one buys Software in $. Then the joy is ours. ;)

Hey, I don’t live in the U.S. I live in Manila which is a city in the Philippines. Like you I also had to pay much more for Apple stuff. It’s getting better though. The prices are getting much closer.

Price difference between countries are indeed unfair. But it’s a fact of life.

Honestly I’d pay a premium for an iPhone if I could right now, buy $1500 is just ridiculous. I’d probably pay as high as $700 but that’s about it.

Oh, sorry for me mislocating you, it was not intended.. ;-)

You are right for sure, 1500$ is ridiculous but I am sure this is just a slap back in the face of Vodafone which started this whole thing with the court order. T-Mobile has the exclusive rights for the iPhone and if someone wants to “unlock” the phone he has to jailbreak it (don’t want to imagine how much “fun” THAT is for long terms) or pay the 999 Euros for the unlocked phone without a 2 year contract. In fact I think it would not be the first phone in Germany I see wich sells for 1000 Euros without a contract. Especially new “high-tech” mobiles indeed sell for this price if you just want the phone but no 2 year contract wich is quite normal over here..
