150USD for Windows XP Installation

You read that right! Dell is now charging three times the amount they charged a few months back if you want to downgrade your Dell 530 Desktops and Inspiron 1525 notebooks to Windows XP.

This option is only available on Windows Vista Business and Ultimate editions; however, the disk for your Windows Vista would still be shipped in case you want to upgrade back to Microsoft’s Vista operating system. Also, as per agreement with Microsoft, consumers can only downgrade to Windows XP Professional version.

Just last June when Microsoft retired XP, Dell only asked for a 20-50USD charge for the downgrade and today it has tripled that price, discouraging consumers from using Windows XP.

This makes the case for the article I wrote two weeks back about second hand computers becoming hot items simply because they had Windows XP installed already. You can read the article here — Second Hand PCs are Hot Items, Why?

When I asked about downgrading last year, I was told they didn’t even offer it.
