16-Year-Old Professional Baseball Player?

July 7, 2008 by Lyndsey D'Arcangelo

What’s in the water these days? First you have Brittney Griner, the 6′8″ girl’s basketball phenom who’s only a senior in high school and now you have 16-year-old Michael Iona, who was signed last Wednesday to play professional baseball for the Oakland A’s.

Have these kids been eating their wheaties or what?

It seems that athleticism is growing stronger at an alarming and younger rate. Competition is more intense and the physicality of athletes is more impressive than the generation before. It’s just the way humans are evolving.

Iona, like Griner, is a freak of nature. He’s a natural talent. And while most kids his age are gearing up for their junior year in high school, he’ll be taking the mound and pitching to some of the best hitters in professional baseball.

What can we expect from these kids at the professional level who still have plenty of time to grow and hone their already amazing skills? It’s mind boggling to think that they can only get better, consider how good they are now.
