2007 Sales Figures Impressive

We’re now into mid-January, which means that all of gaming’s bean counters and industry watchers have had time to tally the holiday season and come up with their annuals sales records for 2007.
Some interesting tidbits that have come to light so far:
- A whopping 52% of all hardware system sales in 2007 were Nintendo. In fact, the Japanese company had the two top selling systems of the year, with the Wii selling almost 6.3 million units (2.3m in the holiday rush), coming in second to its cousin, the DS, which sold a fantastic 8.5 million units over the year (4m in Nov-Dec alone).
- Overall, the industry showed an increase of 43% in sales over 2006. The major catalyst for this improvement? Again Nintendo, which sprouted an impressive 60% over 2006 for its own sales numbers.
- Xbox owners are more attached to buying gadgets for their machines, with record high software and accessories.
- Activision snagged top publishing spot in the US market according to the NPD Group, increasing its market share by 7.2% up to 17.7%, built largely on the strength of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Guitar Hero III, which were the #1 and #3 selling games across all consoles last year.
- NPD Analyst Anita Frazier sums it up neatly, saying:
“Both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 realized strong month-over-month hardware sales increases. The 360 in particular seems to have benefitted from a killer slate of hardware-acquisition-driving content including COD4, Assassin’s Creed, and Halo 3. … [But] Nintendo has certainly been the belle of the hardware ball this year, capturing the top two spots for hardware units sales for the year with the DS followed by the Wii.”
So a strong overall year for everyone, with an honourable mention for the improved 360 sales (despite the whole red ring of death controversy), and a huge pat on the back for Nintendo, who holds the lion’s share of the market and is exerting a great deal of influence industry wide.

Congrats to all of them. Competition is only a healthy thing after all, and I hope we can continue to get plenty of great titles from all the big three in many years to come. =)
