Taking a look back at 2008, I noticed I reviewed 6 books here on Slacker Manager (click the book name to check out the review):
- Pat Lencioni’s 3 Signs of a Miserable Job
- Mike Abrashoff’s It’s Our Ship
- Bob Selden’s What to Do When You Become the Boss
- Steve Pavlina’s Personal Development for Smart People
- Rich DeVos’s Ten Powerful Phrases for Positive People
- Vince Poscente’s The Age of Speed
In 2009, I plan to review at least 1 book a month plus 1 extra (13 total).
Here are 5 I might be reviewing:
- GL Hoffman’s Dig Your Job
- Jack Covert and Todd Sattersten’s The 100 Best Business Books of All Time
- David Meerman Scott’s World Wide Rave
- Steve Farber’s Greater Than Yourself
- Marti Lawrence’s 7 Ways You Screw Up Your Life
I only review the best of the best, though I read quite a few more books than this every year. I also plan to do at least 6 book giveaways for you so you can read some of the best.
3 questions for you:
- Are these book reviews helpful for you?
- Do you have a management/leadership book you want me to review?
- Do you have a management/leadership book that you’d like to review?
Please let me know what you think in the comments and I’ll do what I can to make your request a reality!

1) They’re good.
2) Anything by Maxwell. Is it just me or is he too awesome?
3) Lots. What surprises me is how the 8th Habit and Thank You for Arguing don’t come up enough. The 8th Habit is insanely researched, and Thank You for Arguing is remarkably powerful for skilled influence.
Note that I tend not to be a fan of book reviews, simply because the focus is on rating a book against some criteria. I prefer sharing lessons learned from books.
I point this out because I’ve read many, many insightful, but *crappy* books ;)
Sometimes books fall short on the macro lesson, but excel at the micro-lessons.
J.D. – I am a HUGE John Maxwell fan! I have the boxed Leadership Gold set as well as almost all of his books. I even was a Maximum Impact member for a while, and attended a few MI seminars. Good stuff.
I’m not familiar with Thank You for Arguing. I’ll have to check it out.
I share lessons, so I guess it’s not really a “review.” I’m glad it’s helpful though.
Insightful and crappy…Love it!
If you want to share any reviews, let me know. 500 words or more of unpublished work and I’ll share them here so we all can get smarter!
Great list; I saw some new titles I’d like to read. Thank you.
You might want to look at Lee Cockerell’s “Creating Magic”. It’s a leadership book that came out in the last few months with some great ideas. Otherwise, I’d be happy to review it, too.
Phil, I hope you will read, enjoy and review my book. I am so honored just to be included in the “possibles”. Thank you and all the best to you!
