2008: Year of the Playstation 3?

Mania.com has published Six Reasons why the Playstation 3 might dominate in 2008. I agree with a couple of the reasons, but some of the others don’t buoy my confidence. Here’s a small sample of what’s presented, along with my own thoughts.

“The processing power of the Playstation 3 will be released.”

No real reason why this shouldn’t happen, but then again all sorts of sparklies will be released from every system as developers get a better hold on what they can do.

“The Xbox 360 is too expensive.”

Whoa. Whoa. There’s one system that’s considered beyond the pocketbook of mortal man, and the 360 isn’t it. In fairness, the article does cite reasons why the 360 could become more expensive than the PS3: No wi-fi without an adaptor, pay extra for more HD space, pay even more for the HD-DVD player–all stuff that Microsoft wisely refrained from forcing me to buy from the get-go. Currently, I don’t need more HD space on my 360. I don’t want an HD-DVD player. And even though I have an ethernet cable running across my living room, it’s not like the Queen’s dropping in for a visit anytime soon.

“Xbox Live–and the Xbox 360 itself–is broken.”

If you tried to get onto Xbox Live last Christmas, you probably discovered that you pretty much couldn’t. An influx of new users melted down the servers. Besides which, XBL is notoriously buggy, with achievements not unlocking or else re-locking.

PSN is likely the superior of the two in terms of functionality. If we get the content to go with it, something nice will indeed happen.

No argument on the borked hardware issue, though I’m hoping Microsoft is now making 360s that don’t die.
