Inflation is everywhere and it even applies to the tennis world earnings. Last year, Maria Sharpova won $1.37 million dollars for winning the 2008 Australian Open. Not bad, not bad at all.
This year, the singles winners of the 2009 Australian Open, will win AUD $2 million and the runners-up will each get $1 million.
Is $2 million dollars too much for winning the biggest sporting event in January? Tennis Australia Chief Executive Officer Steve Wood doesn’t think so.
Wood said, “This is an investment in the major revenue source for our sport in this country. The Australian Open Grand Slam trophy is one of the most sought after prizes in world tennis. We want to work with the players to further elevate the status of the Australian Open. We believe that $2 million is an appropriate reward for winning the biggest sporting event in the world in January.”
The biggest question is…who will walk away with the $2 million this year?
