The heart is in the same place but the engine is still in the front with the new 2009 Volkswagen Beetle. I had the pleasure once to maintenance one of these back when I worked as a mechanic. I was pleasantly surprised by the power such a little car could have. I mean I thought that it was by far the most fun cars I’ve ever driven.

If you are looking at one of these you’ll be happy to know that the have a relatively low starting price of $21,975. That’ll get you the standard 2.5L 150hp 5 cylinder 20 valve engine. Four cylinders is the standard for the size of the engine. I guess that VW included the 5 cylinder to help smooth out the roughness the small diesel engines tend to cause. Not a bad idea. But what else would you expect from good German engineering. Another good option for any VW is to have it turbocharged.
