3 Things Women Can Do to Position Themselves for a Promotion

If you work in corporate America, you may find that it’s hard to break the proverbial “glass ceiling.” You’ve tried and tried, but you just cannot seem to get promoted, short of doing something unethical. So, how can a woman in business get promoted and still show her face at work the next day? Here’s how:

Don’t be afraid to take on extra responsibilities. Your male counterpart is wowing the boss because he’s finishing projects left and right. He’s going the extra mile to show the boss he’s willing and dedicated. If you’re asked to take on more, do it. But, also be
firm and set parameters for yourself. Know when too much is TOO much and when you need to say no.

Stop using your parental responsibilities as a crutch. It’s true that working moms have a huge responsibility, but everyone doesn’t want to hear about it all of the time. Especially Mr. Boss. This sends red flags up in his mind. Consequently, when your name comes up for promotion, that may be the time when Mr. Boss decides your “parental responsibilities” may be just too much for you to handle.

Be punctual. To work. To meetings. To conference calls. Back from lunch. You get me. Stop skating into the office on two wheels. Plan for life and make provisions for emergencies. No one likes to be late, especially you, I know. So, create a schedule for yourself so that allowances are made for when you have one of “those days.”

Promotion is not easy, nor is staying in the same job that much fun. These tips are meant to help you reposition things in your life to make you more promotable. Give them a try and see what happens. Every little bit counts!
