Today’s series of tips for freelance writers are all about how to keep writing, no matter what.
- I love this tip at Matthew C Keegan of the Article Writer – Just Keep On Writing. Like me, Matthew writes through his writer’s block. I’ve written about Writer’s Block too, with some solid suggestions.
- Jennifer, creator of the Writer Momma Chic blog has set herself some page goals – this works too. I know, I’ve tried it.
- Another trick I use when I get stuck one way or another is Book Ending.

The most important question a writer has to answer is, “How badly do I want it?” with “it” being a writing career.
If you want to be a professional writer, to have this be your business and vocation as well as your passion, you have to make it the priority.
Not a priority.
THE priority.
You have to protect the work, do you work at your peak biorhythmic times.
You have to show up on the page even on the days when you’d rather do anything else.
You have to make a commitment and you have to stick to it.
There’s nothing wrong with writing only when you feel like it, but if you’re going to be a professional, you rely on your craft as much as on your art.
Faster than a direct mail piece sent via snail mail…
Stronger than a shot in the dark on a downward-bidding job board…
Able to go home with a calendar full of face-to-face appointments….
It’s an ad agency.
It’s an online portfolio.
No!
It’s networking!
I can think of a thousand less pleasant ways to market my writing business than having coffee or lunch with the friendly entrepreneurs from my local Chamber of Commerce. They’re busy trying to make money. Whether they’re great writers or not, writing is not a money-making activity. Encourage them to make the highest best use of their time and hire the rest.

Networking… yes! And it has the additional advantage of getting us out of our home office and away from the computer… excellent.
