They're busy trying to make money. Whether they're great writers or not, writing is not a money-making activity. Encourage them to make the highest best use of their time and hire the rest. I can think of a thousand less pleasant ways to market my writing business than having coffee or lunch with the friendly entrepreneurs from my local Chamber of Commerce. They’re busy trying to make money. Whether they’re great writers or not, writing is not a money-making activity. Encourage them to make the highest best use of their time and hire the rest.

If you want to be a professional writer, to have this be your business and vocation as well as your passion, you have to make it the priority. Not a priority. THE priority. You have to protect the work, do you work at your peak biorhythmic times. You have to show up on the page even on the days when you'd rather do anything else. You have to make a commitment and you have to stick to it. There's nothing wrong with writing only when you feel like it, but if you're going to be a professional, you rely on your craft as much as on your art.
