3D Bionic Command-Ohhh…
Bionic Command is an 8-bit classic. You had typical things like shooting and running and giant enemy Nazis, but Capcom but enough thought and work into the game that it went far beyond what was expected of an action game. Players couldn’t jump, which was initially a blasphemy for anyone raised on a diet of Super Mario Bros. Instead, the game’s red-haired hero relied on his bionic arm to lift himself onto platforms and swing like a monkey.
These unfamiliar physics, combined with necessities like wire-tapping and careful map navigation, made for a very unique challenge. Emphasis on “challenge.” I’ve never been any good at Bionic Commando, though I appreciate its place in gaming culture. I intend to acquire a dog in the near future and name it Super Joe.
Though ignored for many cold years after the death of the NES, Bionic Commando has been getting some attention lately. Capcom is working on a 3D title, but even better, a 3D remake of the original game will be available for download on PSN and XBL. Rad (Spencer).
The ESRB rating warns that the game/video “May not contain content suitable for children.” My husband said, “Yeah, like Hitler’s exploding head.” Psht, if we could handle it, I expect no less of this soft generation. Someone needs to take a formal count on how many of us broke our curse-word cherries with Hitler’s (Sorry, Master D’s) declaration of “You damn fool.”
