5 Resolutions for Eco-Friendlier Driving

Most resolutions fail because they are wildly unreasonably. Lose 40 lbs by summer. Save $500 a month. Never make mistakes ever again. Those aren’t realistic, and once you fall a little short of your goal, it’s easy to throw the whole thing out the window. But these five resolutions … they’re simple. They’re easy. Anyone can do them most of the time, and if you fall behind once, there’s no ginormous goal that’s going to falter. You can just as easily just do it differently next time around.

So, without further ado, here are MY 5 Resolutions for Eco-Friendlier Driving:

I. Call ahead. A large chunk of the population hates surprise visitors anyway, but calling ahead offers another advantage. You know if someone’s going to be home, or if a store is going to be open. If you’re thinking of dropping a fair wad of change, there’s really no problem in asking if they have a particular item.

II. Combine your trips. This one can take some planning, but usually not much. In fact, over at CleanMPG.com they’ve got some excellent tips – like going to the furthest place first. This is especially important in colder seasons when your car becomes more efficient as it warms up.

III. Reserve cruise control for flat surfaces. Cruise can really help you save gas when you’re driving … on FLAT ground. Hills are another matter entirely. Instead of using cruise control in hilly areas, turn it off, slowly speed up to a reasonable amount until you’re just at the dip and then hold that pedal position with your foot. Just don’t get rear-ended. :p

IV. Keep an eye on your tire pressure. We all know how even a small drop can impact our mpg, and with the new systems in cars (and the inexpensive caps you can put on older models) it’s an easy way to keep your car in good shape.

V. Check out public transportation. I know every area doesn’t have the best public transit, but at least check out your options. Once you have the tools, it’s easier to use them.

I hope everyone has a great 2008, and finds other little ways to make a difference on the environment.
