A Big Day For Some Big Games? Think Again!

I can never figure out just what the powers that be are thinking when they’re scheduling sporting events.

After 10 straight days of 80-plus degree weather things have returned to normal here in Southern California. We’re back in the 60’s with some rain. That just means that I’m not emailing Ryan Pravato on by Blackberry from the beach or my favorite coffeehouse wondering if he’s finished shoveling snow in Michigan.

That also means I have plenty of time to sit and watch some big time college basketball today (or at least until it’s time to take my son to a birthday party at his best friend’s house in a few hours).

There should be some big games on today, right? I mean, college basketball has the sports world all to itself, right? Let’s get some Duke, some UCLA, a big Big 12, Big East or Big 10 (plus one) match up. Anything big!

But really, is there such a thing as a big Big 10 (plus one) match up?

And sadly, UCLA, Duke and the other big games were played on Saturday when many of us had other things to do.

Checking out the local listings, this is what we’re being treated today.

As I write this I see that Navy is playing at Army.

I thought they only played each other in football.

Also on is Minnesota at Indiana.

Again, I asked for a big match up from that conference!

Ooh! The Florida at Vanderbilt game just started as did Duquesne at Fordham!

No need for me to leave the couch!

Later Michigan State plays at Ohio State. That’s not even a good football game anymore. What makes the genius schedulers think it’s a good basketball game to televise?

Virgina Tech is at Miami, Northern Iowa is at Missouri State, and we close out the day with the thrilling Georgia Tech at Clemson.

There are a ton of women’s games on too, but they couldn’t even get that right.

Where’s Tennessee? Pat Summit is a couple of games away from 1,000 wins and what do we get?

North Carolina at Maryland. Hopefully the Maryland women will do better than the men did against Duke yesterday.

This is the first weekend of the season where there is no football of any kind on. The Super Bowl is a week away and I think they played the last college football game yesterday. Nearly 40,000 showed up to see the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala.

Nearly 40,000 to see a useless college football all-star game? Get a life Mobile!

Speaking of useless all-star games, The NHL plays it’s all-star game today on Verses!? Who gets Verses? NBC has the “network contract” for the NHL and they turned down this game to show men’s figure skating and freestyle skiing?

The Winter X Games are on too and you know how well that goes over here in Southern California. I can see the ratings going through the roof!

The Los Angeles Lakers play at home against the San Antonio Spurs in a little more than an hour. A fine match up for my friends in the Midwest and east coast looking for something to watch.

So this is what college basketball fans treated to on the first non-football Sunday of the season.

No wonder sports fans can’t wait for pitchers and catcher to report for Spring Training this time of the year.

  1. Ryan Pravato says:

I’m not thrilled about the dirt you’re throwing at the Big 10.

The MSU v. Ohio St. game is a highly entertaining matchup.

Durrell Summers is having a career day.

  2. Ryan Pravato says:

The same Big Ten conference that has beaten UCLA, Duke, Louisville, Texas, Mizz, Davidson, Notre Dame, Miami, Florida St, V Tech,-

The conference is looking at getting 6 teams in to the tourney, more than the Pac 10 it looks like.
