A bit of trivia on the Olympic Rings

ringsWe all know that the main thrust of the Olympic Games is to bridge the gap between and among countries, hence, creating friendships through sports.

It’s no surprise then if I tell you that the Olympic emblem, which are the 5 interlocking rings, represents the linking of the world’s 5 continents: Asia, the Americas, Africa, Australia, and Europe. All united by Olympism.

However, with this thought, the Americas were viewed as a single continent and Antartica was omitted.

Of course, if we focus on the chosen colours for each ring, there’s also a corresponding symbolism. The colours are featured respectively in the order I’m going to list it: Blue, Yellow, Black, Green, and Red. So, it’s quite cool to note that at least one of the 5 colours can be found in each of the country’s national flag.

This emblem became popular when it was highly publicised by the Nazi Germany.

Even the white background of the Olympic flag was meant to be white. According to Wikipedia, the five Olympic rings were designed in 1913, adopted in 1914 and debuted at the 1920 Antwerp Games.
