A Can Can Make A Difference (CCMAD), is the feeding arm of Adopt-A-Block, Inc., and was established to help eliminate hunger in the State of Maryland. On January 23, 1992, war was declared on hunger. Since that day, outreach centers, soup kitchens, churches, and local government agencies have banded together to feed the poverty-stricken residents of Baltimore City and the State of Maryland.
A Can Can Make A Difference serves more than 130 agencies, including shelters, soup kitchens, church and agency pantries. They have hundreds of volunteers serving as a focused and dedicated army. Together, they help meet the diversified needs of those in their communities.
The CCMAD operation has expanded, and to increase their momentum, CCMAD began working with the Children’s Hunger Fund, Operation Compassion, and Gifts in Kind to receive truckloads of clothing and toys. Through these partnerships and others, CCMAD has been able to feed, clothe, and bring smiles to the faces of thousands of people.
This morning I had the privilege to attend the grand reopening of a A Can Can Make a Difference (CCMAD). During the
ribbon cutting ceremony, the President and Administrator of CCMAD honored Ms. Palestine Boone. She has been volunteering at CCMAD for more than 12 years. She is the voice over the phone that communicates food donations to the respective agencies who receive food from CCMAD. She is also there to assist with the food given to the various agencies who receive food from CCMAD and feed hungry people, men, women and children.
As I listened to the story of how CCMAD began, and as I saw the suprise on Ms. Boone’s face when she was honored with a plaque, I began to think about the power of a committed volunteer. For those of you who are in a job search, maybe you are struggling in your job search, but the best remedy for discouragement, that I can think of is giving of your time to help someone else. That is what Ms. Boone has been doing for years. She is not looking for acalades or a plaque, but her commitment to the vision of CCMAD has made a difference in the lives of those who are hungry – who need food. Ms. Boone’s efforts over the years has helped to keep the vision alive at CCMAD and I wanted to honor her commitment by sharing her story with you. I want to encourage you to find a way to help someone else. As you do, you will find that doors will open for you.
