A Freelance Writers Workspace

mztiz.jpgI live in a studio that has some advantages, including a wee garden and a garage. Its major disadvantage is that there’s no true cross breeze. Since I live in San Diego, I can usually solve this by keeping the front (the only) door open. This is my fourth summer here and until this week, there have only been a few days each year that are pretty hot and awful.

This year the heat and humidity locked in about a week ago with temperatures where I am running close to 90 degrees and the humidity around 60 percent or better. With no breeze and no air conditioning, I’ve had real trouble working. My approach has been to start early in the morning and stop around noon. I also haven’t been sleeping well.

This morning at 8 a.m. I checked the temperature and it was already 87 degrees. A quick look at the weather forecast told me it was going to get hotter today and this heat wave was going to last another full week, maybe longer.

I started looking for an air conditioner. A few calls to the likely stores revealed they were sold out. SanDiegoCraigslist.org had several posts with people wanting air conditioners and one guy selling six! Although I wouldn’t call someone I didn’t know at 8 a.m. on a Sunday, I figured email wouldn’t hurt. Sure enough, he’s an early riser too and by a bit after 9 I’d brought my treasure home.

Then there was the installation drama, which I did myself, and it took some serious fiddling because my place is old and the window frame is old. But, I got it done. I was going to ask for help, but no one was around and I made it work. Even MzTiz is, if not delighted, at least willing to be inside instead of out under some bushes.

I don’t like the noise and I don’t like having everything closed up, but I’m no longer sweltering and I suspect I’ll get a good night’s sleep. I’ll have to buy some more carbon credits to offset this extra energy use, but I’m more than willing to do that.

I’m delighted to be able to be back to work, in spite of the heat.

The working environment makes a big difference to one’s productivity. Not being able to sleep at night will in time not allow you to work anywhere near the level you need to in order to meet your project deadlines.

I hadn’t thought that an air conditioner would be “technology for writers” but I might have to do a post on just that!

Keep cool — and thanks for writing the blog.

  2. Great post and I have to say its very surprising what you end up finding on craigslist.

Thanks Scot, not quite 24 hours later I’m wondering why I waited! I will have to say I’m looking forward to cooler weather… but until then…

I want to get in touch with other writer’s in the RI area. I need to write a book that is entitled “Take This Woman.” And, I realize that I need some help in trying to achieve this. I have already written another book, “Murder At Lincoln High.” I never got a chance to promote my book as I devolped cancer in my uterus and then there was breast cancer. Please try and help me. Thanks.
