A Morning Not Writing

I’m normally at my computer writing by 6:30 or 7 in the morning. I’m one of those folks who likes getting up at first light and mornings are my most creative time. It’s just flat easier to write in the morning for me than at any other time.
Today, however, I’m doing it differently. First of all, I’m pretty well caught up with writing for clients at the moment. Secondly, I have two important appointments this afternoon. Afternoons are when I usually do my running around. I needed to go to an office supply store to get stick on dots so I could price my pottery for a student sale this weekend. Given what this afternoon and tomorrow look like, this morning seemed my only good chance.
I’ve also been wanting a new throw rug for my kitchen and a replacement hose for the garden… easy to pick up at the same time. So I was at the stores early today. I’ve also been doing some of the fiddly little chores, like moving the soaker hose and trying to woo the kitten and her feral mother.
Frankly, it feels like one of those nice change ups we do once and awhile. I suspect I’ll be back at the computer early tomorrow, but shopping, etc. first has been a nice change.
Actually, it’s not quite 10 a.m. and I know lots of freelance writers never get started before 10 or 11… of course, they go to bed way later than I do. What time do you start your writing day?

Ann, like you I am an early riser as I write for some European websites I check my RSS feed to see whether my posts have been published. I also chat to other writers in Asia who are usually winding down as I am getting ready to research etc but I actually start writing only at around 10 am..wish I had better time management skills sigh!
sounds like you’re actually using your time quite well… at least it sounds like that to me.
:-) :-) sometimes I can’t get the work I need to do done ..not that I have ever missed a deadline ..but I tend to push back chores and errands when I chat online too long ..that’s what I meant ..my true test is to come next week when I have summer visitors and I will have to work around them and squire them around New York City ..wish me luck!!
Anne, I am a morning person too, by default. With kids, school buses, backpacks, etc., the best time for me to write is after everyone has left and it’s just me and my coffee cup. That’s usually around 7:30 a.m.
good luck, anjeeta, let us know how it worked with the guests.
Bridget… I remember when my kids were little ;)
I’m definitely not a morning writer. Now that it’s light earlier in the morning, I am waking up earlier and I hate it. I prefer to wake up around 10am and go to bed around 1am. I do my best (and most) writing between 10pm and 1am. Just sitting in bed while the bf sleeps, tv on the lowest volume. Everything is quiet. During the day, I don’t know, too much going on. I never can get relaxed enough.
April, don’t you just love how different we are?
My writing day is broken up into chunks. The first one is in the morning. I get up a little before it is time to wake up my 5 year old for school and spend time on the computer checking email, etc. While she has some play time before school, I complete that work (hopefully) and then after she goes to school I settle in for my first work session of the day.
sounds like a good pace
