A Rare Encounter That’s Not a Shiny Pokemon

I’m home from Otakon. My neighbourhood blew up while I was gone, but otherwise it was a non-eventful event.
Here at Handheld Age, I don’t get much of a chance to speak about the forefathers of our favourite bite-sized hobby. Kids today think that anything older than the Gameboy Advance is a boogery pile of boogers, and who can blame them.
But today on the long, long train ride back home, I was astounded to see the boy in the seat next to me playing a Game Boy.
Not a DS.
Not a GBA.
Not a Gameboy Colour.
A Game Boy. The original brick with the green screen.
Train travel means seats strewn with DS’s and PSP’s and Blackberries and iPhones. It was an honour to have their ancestor ride with us.
Same dude also had a tape player instead of an mp3 player. Wow, even CD players seem archaic to me these days.
He seemed like an interesting individual and I wish I’d subscribed to his newsletter.

I still have one of those and a bunch of games, um, somewhere (I’m sure I’ll find while cleaning and packing for an imminent move upstate). It’s kind of hard to play most games when pressing up on the d-pad makes the system reset, though.
I still have most of my Gameboy games. They’re in a plastic bag, stowed in my nightstand drawer. Good place for them, I figure.
Mine are in an old-school Gameboy carrier… somewhere. I only discovered I don’t know where they are when I wanted to replay Link’s Awakening recently and couldn’t find it. That was a traumatic night.
Saw one at a Toy store for $24.99. I may just go pick it up now, hah. I only have only 2 gameboy pockets, I wasn’t a big fan of the green screen… but It’s grown on me :).
I hope he brought extra batteries!
I’ve been spending some quality time with a GBC and Dragon Warrior III every night before bed. It’s like a good book you can’t put down.
