Acacia Wins $6.6 Million Suit Against Yahoo

Yahoo got some bad news on Monday when a jury decided to award Acacia Research Corporation with a $6.6 million judgment on the grounds that Yahoo infringed on a patent. The patent in question is an advertising patent that Yahoo apparently ignored by inserting ads into the background of web pages and emails.

“Although we are disappointed with the verdict,” said Yahoo in a written statement, “we firmly believe in the merits of our case, and we are considering our options going forward, including whether to appeal.”

The judgment was handed down in Newport Beach, California where Yahoo’s IMVironments were under the microscope. Acacia, a company that is in the business of purchasing patents, claimed that the IMVironments stepped on the toes of one of their patents.

An email to Acacia for this article wasn’t immediately returned.
