Home directory in Vista is mapped to your own user top level directory wherein you can access your documents, downloads, pictures, etc. Your own home directory is the root where you can save files and other stuff. Previously, you are used to dumping everything in the root of C; but Vista would disallow you to do that now.
To Access Home Directory
1. Click your Start Menu
2. Go to your user name
3. Right click on it
4. Click on Show on Desktop
On the desktop, your icon would show up.

Another way to do it:
1) right-click the desktop and select personalize
2) In the left column, under tasks click Change Desktop Icons
3) Check User’s files
